Brief History of the company:

Bhutan Milk & Agro Private limited, formerly known as Bhutan Dairy & Agro Limited (BDAPL), started as a Government undertaking in the year 1987. Initially, it started as a manufacturer of cheese and pouch milk with Mr. Ugen Wangdi as the Project Director. In 1994, under the privatization policy, Mr. Ugen Wangdi bought 38 percent of the company and started running the company as the Managing Director with an authorized capital of only Nu.10 million. Right from the inception, the company was operating at a loss. It was during this time that the other major investors gave way for almost full ownership to Mr. Ugen Wangdi who then operated the company like a sole proprietor and owned 92% of the company shareholdings. It was on the brink of shutting down until Tetra Pak came into the scene in the year 2005. Tetra Pak is the world’s leader and largest manufacturer and supplier of packaging materials for milk and other liquid food products. Tetra Laval, the head company of Tetra Pak, manufactures machineries used for aseptic food processing and packaging.

The Tetra Pak project started in January 2005 with an authorized capital of Nu.110 million. The company commenced production in March, 2005 and was manufacturing and packing Milk in 1000ml and fruit drinks of Mango, Apple and Litchi in 200ml packs. The products were certified by ISO and the Hazard Analytical Critical Control Body (HACCP).

Few years after the commissioning of the plant, the project started to suffer due to inadequate working capital and huge accumulated losses. It was then that new investor, Mr. Shacha Rinchen Dorji, the current Chairman of the company, decided to invest in the company. Mr. Shacha Rinchen Dorji set up comprehensive plans for revival of the company and within a span of few years, in the year 2010, also installed a packaged spring water plant, the first private large scale packaging drinking water plant in Bhutan. The Management was also taken over by Mr. Shacha Rinchen Dorji, now fully owning the company. It was then that the company’s name was changed to Bhutan Milk & Agro Private Limited.
